Verizon Fios Advanced Wi-Fi Router (Actiontec MI424WR): own router and bridge mode
Can I use my own router with the Verizon Fios Advanced Wi-Fi Router (Actiontec MI424WR)?
Partial
Own router works as a Wi-Fi access point; no bridge mode documented
- Bridge modeNot in the ISP pages we read
- IP PassthroughNot in the ISP pages we read
- Own routerPartial
Verizon documents using a third-party router behind a Fios router in AP mode. The user guide shows a DMZ Host option but no bridge or IP Passthrough mode.
Model numbers: MI424WR · Type: Gateway (modem + router)
How to set it up
- Turn off Wi-Fi on the Fios router (My Fios app, My Verizon, or the router's admin page at 192.168.1.1: Quick Links, Change Wireless Settings).
- Connect your own router's WAN/Internet port to a LAN port on the Fios router.
- Set your router to AP mode (for Orbi: orbilogin.com, Router/AP Mode).
Know before you switch
- Verizon's Orbi guide says to turn off Wi-Fi on the Fios router and run the third-party router in AP mode so the Verizon router can keep acting as the router and the Fios TV app keeps working.
- The user guide documents a DMZ Host setting (one device receives unsolicited inbound traffic), not a bridge or IP Passthrough mode.
- Replacing the Fios router with your own directly on the ONT is not documented in the Verizon pages we retrieved; third-party reports exist but are not used here.
How sure are we?
Confidence is medium. Manual read for absence of bridge/passthrough; it has a DMZ host and a LAN network bridge section, not a modem-style bridge mode. Verizon's Orbi page covers 'Fios Advanced Wi-Fi Router and other models'. Absence is not proof.
This page reports what the ISP documented on the date above. ISPs change firmware and policy; if your gateway screen differs, trust your ISP's current page.
